-48V HOT-SWAP CONTROLLERS REQUIRE NO EXTERNAL SENSE RESISTORS AND ARE IMMUNE TO INPUT-VOLTAGE STEPS
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 3, 2004-Maxim Integrated Products
(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5936/MAX5937/MAX5938, the
industry's most flexible -48V hot-swap controllers for telecom, networking, and
computer-server line cards. These devices allow line cards to be safely inserted
and removed from a live backplane without causing glitches on the system
power-supply rail.
Rated for -10V to -80V inputs, these controllers are well suited for -48V
telecom power backplanes. The devices integrate a load-probe feature and an
adjustable circuit-breaker function that checks for short-circuit conditions prior
to power-up, thereby eliminating the need for an external sense resistor. All
devices are immune to input-voltage steps caused by battery switchover in
telecom systems. During an input-voltage step, these devices limit the current
drawn by the load to a safe level without turning off power to the load.
The MAX5936/MAX5937/MAX5938 rapidly turn off the external
MOSFET and provide a 400mA GATE pull-down current in response to severe
overcurrent and short-circuit fault conditions.
Other controller features include input undervoltage and overvoltage
protection, power-good status indicator, and output slew-rate control. All
devices are available with choice of latched or autoretry fault management. The
MAX5938 is available with accurate turn-on/turn-off thresholds and
programmable circuit-breaker threshold.
The MAX5936/MAX5937 are available in an 8-pin SO package and the
MAX5938 is available in a 16-pin SO package. The devices operate over the
extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices for the MAX5936/
MAX5937 start at $1.21, and $1.33 for MAX5938 (1000-up, FOB USA).
