SUBSECOND ELAPSED TIME COUNTER OFFERS 244 MICROSECONDS RESOLUTION

DALLAS, TX-January 23, 2004-Dallas Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS1318, a 44-bit, binary, elapsed time counter with 244µs resolution. The DS1318 combines a 32-bit seconds counter, a 12-bit subseconds counter, periodic interrupt/alarm, and programmable square-wave output in a 24-pin TSSOP package.

The elapsed time counter's 44-bit binary counter increments once every 244µs. By using a software algorithm, the DS1318 can derive time of day, week, month, and year, thereby serving as a real-time clock. The square-wave output can be selected from 32.768kHz, 8.192kHz, 4.096kHz, or 1Hz, and the interrupt output can be generated periodically or when the upper 32 bits of the counter match an alarm register. The DS1318 monitors VCC, and when a power-fail occurs, it write-protects the internal registers, and switches to backup power to prevent data corruption. In low-power mode, the oscillator maintains timekeeping down to 1.3V, consuming less than 1µA of current. Address and data are transferred using a standard parallel-address bus.

The DS1318 is rated for operation over the industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.28 (1000-up, FOB USA).
