INDUSTRY'S FIRST 21-BIT, PROGRAMMABLE, DC-BALANCED SERIALIZER AND DESERIALIZER CHIPSET

(NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX9213/MAX9214 21-bit, LVDS serializer and deserializer. The MAX9213 serializes 21 bits of LVTTL/LVCMOS data into three LVDS serial data streams. A parallel-rate clock on the fourth channel provides timing for the MAX9214 deserializer. The MAX9214 deserializes three LVDS serial data inputs into 21 single-ended LVTTL/LVCMOS outputs.
The MAX9213/MAX9214 feature programmable DC balance, which allows isolation between the serializer and deserializer by using AC coupling. The DC balance feature also reduces bit errors in the MAX9214 due to a change in the common mode caused by a ground shift. The maximum aggregate payload data rate in DC-balanced mode is 1.386Gbps, and 1.785Gbps in non- DC-balanced mode.
The MAX9213/MAX9214 chipset reduces the number of wires or traces from 22 to 8, saving space and cost in system interconnect applications such as cables and backplanes. The LVDS input and output signals meet the ANSI TIA/EIA-644 LVDS standard.
The MAX9213/MAX9214 are ideal for applications requiring high data rates, such as digital copiers, laser printers, automotive navigation and entertainment systems, network switches and routers, base stations, DSLAM, and central office switches.
The MAX9213/MAX9214 operate from a single 3.3V ±10% supply. The deserializer outputs have a separate supply, allowing 1.8V to 5V output logic levels. The LVDS inputs and outputs meet the IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD spec of ±15kV for Air Discharge and ±8kV for Contact Discharge.
These devices are available in 48-pin TSSOP and QFN packages and are specified for operation from -40°C to +85°C. In the TSSOP package (in the non-DC-balanced mode), the MAX9213/MAX9214 are pin compatible to National Semiconductor's DS90CR215 and DS90CR216A, respectively.
