FIRST DUAL-OUTPUT, WHITE LED DRIVER FOR MAIN AND SUB-DISPLAYS REDUCES POWER BY 25%
SUNNYVALE, CA-April 25, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM)
introduces the MAX1582, the first white LED driver to power up to six
white LEDs in series with a constant current. It provides display
backlighting for two displays (the larger main and the smaller sub)
in cell phones, eliminating the need for ballast resistors, external
switches, and expensive factory calibration to match white LED
brightness.
The proprietary dual-segment, step-up converter includes a 30V, low
drain-source on-resistance, N-channel MOSFET switch to achieve 84%
efficiency and maximum battery life. The MAX1582 operates at constant
1MHz switching frequency, enabling use of a low-profile inductor and
a tiny 0.1 microfarad output capacitor. Other features include analog
or direct-digital PWM brightness control, low 15 milivolt
peak-to-peak input ripple, soft-start for zero inrush current, and
overvoltage protection to eliminate a zener protection diode.
The MAX1582 is available in space-saving, 12-pin thin QFN (4mm x 4mm)
and chip-scale (UCSP(TM)) (2.1mm x 2.1mm x 0.61mm) packages, and is
screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40 degrees
Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius). Prices start at $2.11 (1000-up, FOB
USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
