HIGH-VOLTAGE, LOW-QUIESCENT-CURRENT LINEAR REGULATORS ARE IDEAL FOR AUTOMOTIVE AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-October 31, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5023/MAX5024 high-voltage linear regulators rated for operation over the 6.5V to 65V input voltage range. Both devices can output up to 150mA and draw less than 60µA quiescent current at no load. These linear regulators include reverse-battery protection and can withstand -60V at the input. The MAX5023/MAX5024 include an active-low µP reset circuit that asserts when the regulator output drops below the preset output-voltage threshold. This provides an early warning to the system in the event of impending power failure.

The MAX5023/MAX5024 are designed specifically to meet the demanding requirements of automotive, telecom, industrial, home security, and fire/smoke alarm applications.

For automotive applications, the MAX5023/MAX5024 include an ENABLE input (active high) to turn the regulator on or off, and a HOLD input (active low) that implements a self-holding circuit requiring no additional external components. Pulling the HOLD pin low after enabling the regulator forces the regulator to remain on, even if the enable pin is subsequently pulled low. Releasing the HOLD pin shuts down the regulator. This feature is useful in automotive applications when you turn off the ignition and want the system microprocessor to initiate a controlled shutdown instead of immediately turning off the regulator.

The MAX5023 includes a watchdog timer that monitors a pulse train from the µP. The device generates reset pulses if the pulse train from the µP is missing for longer than the 1.6s watchdog timeout period. The MAX5024 does not include a watchdog input, but features a SET pin that allows the user to override the device's fixed output voltage through an external resistor divider.

Both devices are available with fixed 3.3V or 5V outputs and include indefinite short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown. In addition, the MAX5024's output is externally adjustable from 2.5V to 11V.

Rated for operation at the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C), the MAX5023/MAX5024 are available in a thermally enhanced, surface-mount 8-pin SO package rated at 1.5W power dissipation. Prices start at $0.85 (1000-up, FOB USA).
