MAXIM OFFERS THE INDUSTRY'S SMALLEST, SAFEST, AND MOST ACCURATE SINGLE-CHIP OPTICAL MODULE TEC CONTROLLER

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 10, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX1978/MAX1979, the industry's first single-chip thermal electric controllers (TEC) for optical modules and networks. They integrate temperature-control circuitry, power MOSFETs, and protection and monitoring circuits to provide the smallest TEC controllers for optical modules. The entire circuit fits in 0.93in2 and uses low-profile 3mm inductors.

The MAX1978/MAX1979 control the TEC current, unlike the competitors' devices that control the TEC voltage. This control scheme eliminates surge currents in the TEC and improves system reliability. Individual and accurate heating/cooling current limits and voltage-limit protection provide for the safest design.

A low-drift chopper stabilized error amplifier allows ±0.001°C temperature set-point stability. Built-in current and temperature monitors and under/overtemperature alarms reduce external components.

The MAX1978 is rated at ±3A bidirectional output current and the MAX1979 is rated at 6A unidirectional output current.

Pricing for the MAX1978ETM starts at $9.10 and at $10.50 for the MAX1979ETM (1000-up, FOB, USA). Both devices come in a small 7mm x 7mm QFN package and are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
