HIGH-SENSITIVITY, LOW-POWER, ANALOG TEMPERATURE SENSOR FROM MAXIM OPTIMIZED FOR USE WITH ADCs

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 5, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products (Nasdaq: MXIM) introduces the MAX6612, a low-power, high-sensitivity, precision analog output temperature sensor in a tiny 5-pin SC70 package. The output voltage's sensitivity to temperature is an unusually high 19.53mV/°C, approximately double that of most silicon temperature sensors, which maximizes the usable temperature resolution that can be achieved with a given A/D converter. The MAX6612's high sensitivity also provides greater noise immunity than conventional temperature sensors.

The MAX6612's temperature-to-voltage sensitivity has been selected to provide convenient relationships between temperature and an ADC's digital output. An 8-bit ADC with a 5V reference has an LSB value equal to 19.53mV, which corresponds exactly to the voltage produced by a 1°C change in the MAX6612's temperature. An 8-bit ADC with a 2.5V reference has an LSB value of 9.765mV, or 0.5°C. In contrast, conventional temperature sensor ICs produce nonwhole-number relationships between temperature and ADC output data.

Operating temperature range varies with supply voltage. A 2.4V supply allows the MAX6612 to operate within the -10°C to +70°C range. A 3.3V supply range allows the MAX6612 to operate within the -10°C to +125°C range, and a 5V supply allows operation over the -40°C to +150°C range. The MAX6612's low supply current (30µA max) makes it ideal for portable equipment and is low enough to make self-heating effects negligible.

The MAX6612 is stable when driving large capacitive loads such as long cables or noise-filtering capacitors at an ADC's input. Any capacitive load greater than or equal to 1000pF yields stable operation, providing broad flexibility in board-level design. Prices start at $0.59 (2500-up, FOB USA).
