INTEGRATED BATTERY MONITOR AND PROTECTOR ENABLES RECOVERY OF A FULLY DEPLETED BATTERY CELL

DALLAS, TX -June 28, 2002-Dallas Semiconductor introduces the DS2761 high-precision lithium-ion (Li+) battery monitor and protector. This device integrates precise current, voltage, temperature measurements, nonvolatile data storage, and Li+ protection circuitry into the small footprint of a 16-pin TSSOP package or die-sized flip-chip package. The DS2761 is ideal for use in the battery packs of hand-held devices where remaining capacity estimation, safety monitoring, and battery-specific data storage are needed.

A key feature of the DS2761 is its ability to enable the recovery of deeply and even completely discharged battery cells. When a charger is connected to the pack, the DS2761 provides a charge path that can be used to recover the cell by trickle charging the battery up to the point normal charging methods would be allowed.

Using its optional internal 25 milliohm sense resistor, the DS2761 can measure continuous currents from as low as 625µA to as high as ±1.9A. External filtering allows peak currents higher than ±1.9A to be integrated in the current-accumulation (fuel-gauging) measurement. Using an external sense resistor of another value, the dynamic range can be easily modified. All measured data is stored in on-chip EEPROM or SRAM memory and can be reported to the host through its 1-Wire® communication interface.

Typical applications for the DS2761 include hand-held wireless products such as PDAs, mobile phones, and digital cameras. Prices start at $2.55 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available.

1-Wire is a registered trademark of Dallas Semiconductor.
