LOWEST POWER 4-DIGIT 5 x 7 MATRIX LED DISPLAY DRIVER OPERATES DOWN TO 2.7V
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 21, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX6952 LED display driver and controller. Available in 36-pin SSOP and 40-pin DIP packages, the MAX6952 interfaces microprocessors to cathode-row 5 x 7 dot-matrix LED displays. The MAX6952 uses a 4-wire, SPI-/QSPI-/MICROWIRE-compatible serial interface that can operate up to 26MHz. This LED driver saves 0.6W of power when driving four digits at 40mA peak segment current from a 3.3V supply, compared to a traditional 5V supply.
The MAX6952 drives four 5 x 7 matrix monocolor cathode-row digits, two bicolor matrix monocolor cathode-row digits, or an array of 10 x 14 discrete LEDs.
Included on-chip are a full ASCII 104-character font and 24 characters of user-defined fonts. Each digit features an independent 16-step LED intensity control, plus configurable automatic digit blinking. The driver can use an internal RC oscillator to set multiplex and blink frequencies, or an external clock to enable easy synchronization of multiple drivers.
The drive current of each digit can be individually controlled with 16 equal steps to a maximum of 40mA peak per segment. The full-scale current to the LEDs can be reduced using a single external resistor. The segment drivers are slew-rate limited to reduce EMI.
The MAX6952 features a 36µA (typ), low-power shutdown current and operates from a 2.7V and 5.5V supply. Extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) is standard. Prices start at $8.65 (1000-up, FOB USA).
