SAFEST, SMALLEST, MOST ACCURATE TEC POWER-SUPPLY CONTROLLER WITH INTERNAL FETs FOR FIBER SYSTEMS
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 21, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1968 and MAX1969 compact, reliable, and accurate solutions to power Peltier-based thermoelectric controller (TEC) modules. The MAX1968 provides bipolar (sinking and sourcing) 3A output current without any dead zone and allows ±0.001°C temperature stability for dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM) fiber communication systems. The MAX1969 provides 6A output currents for control of system cooling in Erbium-doped fiber-optical amplifiers (EDFA) and Raman laser pumps.
The MAX1968/MAX1969 integrate the power FETs and switch at frequencies up to 1MHz, allowing for fewer and smaller components. Competitors' solutions require four external FETs and only switch at 250kHz using larger components. Both devices control the TEC current and prevent TEC surge currents which may occur in competitors' parts that only control the TEC voltage. The MAX1968/MAX1969 parts have user-adjustable 5% accurate current limits to protect the TEC under fault conditions and offer the user a selectable maximum TEC voltage setting to improve system reliability. The MAX1968 features individual heating and cooling current limits to further enhance system reliability.
FET switching speeds are optimized to ensure low-noise operation for high-speed data-communication applications, and ripple-canceling minimizes the ripple across the TEC. Switching frequency can be synchronized to an external clock to further control noise.
These devices come in the thermally enhanced, thin, 28-pin TSSOP-EP package and are specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C).
