SMALLEST, 3V INPUT, 1MHz, 92% EFFICIENT DC-DC STEP-DOWN DELIVERS 10A
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 7, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1953 current-mode, 1MHz pulse-width modulation (PWM) step-down DC-DC controller for powering core, I/O, and memory supplies in various applications such as printers, graphic cards, RAID cards, base stations, telecom, and network equipment. The MAX1953's 1MHz current-mode operation provides excellent transient response and significantly reduces output capacitance, size, and cost.
The MAX1953 addresses low input 3.3V and 5V bus applications without the need for a charge pump and features adjustable current-limit and short-circuit protection without the use of current-sense resistors. Internal digital soft-start is included to reduce inrush current.
An all N-channel design reduces cost, and powerful gate drivers, rated at 2Ω (typ) and 3Ω (max), allow a wide range of output currents from 1A to 10A with up to 92% efficiency. The output voltage range extends from 0.8V to 0.86 x VIN. The 1MHz current-mode PWM operation allows loop bandwidth in excess of 100kHz and provides excellent transient response.
The MAX1953EUB comes in a tiny 10-pin µMAX package. Prices start at $0.99 (1000-up, FOB USA). The MAX1953 is specified for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Evaluation kits and application circuits are available to speed designs.
