MINIATURE QUAD BLVDS TRANSCEIVER OPTIMIZED FOR MULTIPOINT BUSES

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-February 26, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the newest member of the Maxim LVDS family, the MAX9157 quad bus LVDS (BLVDS) transceiver. The transceiver consists of four drivers and four receivers optimized for half-duplex, multipoint buses-typically 16 to 20 cards plugged into a backplane. BLVDS, which combines the high speed, low power, and low noise of LVDS, with the space and cost savings of a shared bus, is ideal for system management and control buses in base stations, central office switches, access products, switches, routers, and other communications equipment. Each driver accepts a low-voltage LVTTL/LVCMOS input level, and translates it to LVDS levels when driving a 27Ω load (double terminated, heavily loaded LVDS bus). Each receiver accepts a differential input signal, and translates it to a low-voltage LVTTL/LVCMOS output level.

The MAX9157 includes several features optimized for multipoint buses. The miniature 5mm x 5mm packages (32-pin QFN or 32-pin TQFP) allow the MAX9157 to be placed as close to the bus connector as possible, thereby minimizing stub lengths and maximizing signal integrity. A 50mV receiver input hysteresis improves immunity to bus noise. Controlled, 1ns (min) 0% to 100% transition times at the driver output minimize reflections, further improving signal integrity. A guaranteed 7.2pF bus load capacitance minimizes bus load. Power-on reset ensures glitch-free power-up and power-down. All I/Os are high impedance when VCC = 0 or open for hot swapping.

The MAX9157 operates from a 3.3V single supply and is fully specified for the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. Prices start at $4.50 (1000-up, FOB USA). Refer to the MAX9129 data sheet for a quad BLVDS driver, ideal for dual multipoint full-duplex buses.
