HIGHEST POWER SOT23 STEP-DOWN DC-DC CONVERTERS DELIVER 400mA WITH EFFICIENCY OVER 90%
SUNNYVALE, CA-February 26, 2002-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1920/MAX1921 step-down DC-DC converters, which provide over 400mA at outputs down to 1.25V and fit in 6-pin SOT23 packages. They switch at up to 1.2MHz to reduce external component size. They are the smallest and most efficient way to generate low-voltage core supplies.
They use a proprietary current-limited control scheme that operates at up to a 100% duty cycle to ensure lowest possible dropout while maintaining a low 50µA quiescent supply current. An internal synchronous rectifier eliminates the cost and size of an external diode and improves efficiency, especially at low output voltages; 3.6V input to 3.3V output is 97% efficient at 50mA and 87% at 1mA.Only three small external components are needed for a complete DC-DC solution.
The input voltage range is 2V to 5.5V. The output has 1.5% tolerance. The MAX1921 output is preset with internal resistors at popular voltages of 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3V, and 3.3V. The MAX1920 output is adjustable from 1.25V to 5V using an external resistor-divider. Built-in soft-start limits startup currents.
The MAX1920/MAX1921 are available in space-saving 6-pin SOT23 packages screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.35 (2500-up, FOB USA). The MAX1921EVKIT (evaluation kit) is available to speed designs.
