PHANTOM REAL-TIME CLOCK CONSUMES NO MEMORY SPACE

DALLAS, TX-January 29, 2002-Dallas Semiconductor introduces the DS1254W, the latest addition to the phantom real-time clock family. The DS1254W contains 2M x 8 of nonvolatile (NV) SRAM and operates from a 3.3V power supply. As with the other devices in the phantom clock family, the DS1254W offers a real-time clock hidden behind the memory map and does not require software changes when converting from one member of the family to another. For systems that currently have NV SRAM without a clock, the phantom clocks can be added to the system without reconfiguring the memory map.

The phantom clocks are ideally suited for systems that access the real-time clock only on power-up or rarely during system operation. Systems such as telecom switches, routers, or RAID systems are typical applications. The NV memory in the DS1254W can be used to store system configuration data or crash recovery data. The DS1254W automatically senses the system power-fail, write protects its SRAM memory, and switches to the lithium battery contained in the DS3800 top hat.

The DS1254W operates over the commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C) and is available in a 168-pin BGA module package. Contact the factory for pricing. For more information about the phantom real-time clock family, refer to the Real-Time Clock Design Guide on the Maxim/Dallas website at www.maxim-ic.com.
