3V RS-485/RS-422 ICs FEATURE ±15kV ESD PROTECTION FOR INTERNATIONAL COMPLIANCE
SUNNYVALE, CA—May 21, 1999—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3483E, MAX3485E, MAX3486E, MAX3488E, MAX3490E, and MAX3491E family of 3V, RS-485/RS-422 transceivers for equipment requiring compliance with international standards for electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity. These products save space and cost by eliminating the need for TransZorbs and other external protection normally required to meet these ESD standards. All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are ESD-protected to ±15kV using the Human Body Model and IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge method, and to ±8kV using the IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge method.
Each device contains one driver and one receiver that deliver true RS-485/RS-422 performance down to VCC= 3V. The MAX3483E/MAX3488E feature slew-rate-limited drivers that minimize EMI and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, allowing error-free data transmission at up to 250kbps. The partially slew-rate-limited MAX3486E transmits up to 2.5Mbps. The MAX3485E/MAX3490E/MAX3491E transmit at up to 12Mbps, making them ideal for high-speed industrial buses.
The MAX3488E/MAX3490E/MAX3491E feature full-duplex communication, whereas the MAX3483E/MAX3485E/MAX3486E are designed for half-duplex communication. The MAX3491E is available in 14-pin DIP and SO packages. All other devices are available in eight-pin DIP and SO packages. Prices start from $1.91 (1000-up, FOB USA).
