+48V QUAD HOT-SWAP CONTROLLERS FOR IEEE802.3af-COMPLIANT POWER-OVER-ETHERNET SYSTEMS

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-December 4, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX5913/MAX5914, the industry's first +48V quad hot-swap controllers for IEEE802.3af-compliant power-over-Ethernet systems. The MAX5913/MAX5914 are used in IEEE802.3af-compliant network switches/routers or midspan power insertion units that deliver power to network ports. The devices allow the safe insertion and removal of IP phones, wireless LAN access nodes, and data terminal equipment from a live network port without causing glitches on the power supply.

The MAX5913/MAX5914 are rated for +35V to +72V operation and comply with the IEEE802.3af power-over-Ethernet requirements. Both devices drive external N-channel MOSFETs to provide a controlled power-up for four ports. During startup, they regulate the port current to a preprogrammed limit. After startup, the devices monitor each port for the overcurrent, or short-circuit and open-circuit fault conditions. In the event of a fault condition, the MAX5913/MAX5914 disable power to the port and report a fault. After a fault condition is detected, the devices provide latched or autoretry fault management.

Other features include input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), dual-level current sense, 100mA relay drivers, foldback current limit, programmable over-current time, and autoretry periods. The devices also include internal charge pumps to drive external MOSFETs and port status outputs that report Power-OK or fault conditions.

The MAX5913/MAX5914 are available in the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) in the surface-mount 44-pin MQFP package. Prices start at $6.61 (1000-up, FOB USA).
