900MHz TRANSMITTERS COMBINE MODULATOR, DATA FILTER, VCO, SYNTHESIZER, AND 200mW PA IN A SINGLE CHIP
Note to Editor: The MAX2900–MAX2904 are the most complete 900MHz transmitters available on the market. These transmitters are the first to integrate a 200mW power amplifier and a VCO in one chip without VCO pulling issues. Cost, board size, and design time are significantly reduced.
SUNNYVALE, CA-December 4, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX2900–MAX2904 family of complete single-chip 900MHz transmitters. These transmitters offer a level of integration unmatched in the industry. The MAX2900 transmitter combines a BPSK modulator, modulation filter, VCO and tank circuit, 8-channel PLL synthesizer, and a 200mW power amplifier, all in a 5mm x 5mm package. With the VCO tank circuit integrated on chip, no extra RF shielding or production adjustment of the VCO tank circuit is required, further reducing overall cost.
The transmitters support spread-spectrum BPSK, OOK, ASK, and FM modulation. FM is conveniently achieved by directly modulating the VCO. The MAX2900/MAX2901/MAX2902 are designed for operation in the U.S. 902MHz to 928MHz ISM band. The MAX2900 offers an internal 8-channel synthesizer; the MAX2901 offers a dual-channel synthesizer. The MAX2902 offers a pin to connect an external synthesizer. The MAX2903/MAX2904 are designed for operation in the European 868MHz to 870MHz ISM band. The MAX2903 offers an internal dual-channel synthesizer and the MAX2904 offers a pin to connect an external synthesizer. All versions deliver a maximum output power of +23.5dBm at a 4.5V supply and +20dBm at +3V. The high output power allows a spread-spectrum radio to attain over a 1-mile range while operating in the U.S. ISM band, making it ideal for infrastructure-based wireless automatic meter reading (AMR) applications. Other ISM wireless applications include security/alarms, HVAC control, building access control, and telemetry.
The devices operate from a single +2.7V to +4.5V supply. They are available in the small 28-pin QFN package with exposed pad. Prices start at $3.20 (1000-up, FOB USA).
