SMALLEST DUAL-OUTPUT SUPPLY FOR PDAs PROVIDES 500mA STEP DOWN FOR LOGIC AND 28V STEP UP FOR LCDs
SUNNYVALE, CA-November 29, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1878, the smallest high-efficiency, dual-output power-supply IC for PDAs, organizers, MP3 players, GPS receivers, and other hand-held equipment. It operates on just 19µA of quiescent supply current (reduced down to 1µA in logic-controlled shutdown), which permits high efficiency even at low output currents.
The MAX1878 is the simplest single-chip solution providing both logic power (down to 1.25V, up to 500mA) and LCD power (up to 28V) in a tiny 12-pin QFN package (4mm x 4mm x 1mm high). It requires no external FETs. The input range is 2V to 5.5V and is intended for 2- or 3-cell alkaline or single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) battery inputs. Each output is independently enabled.
Its high-efficiency step-down DC-DC converter with synchronous rectification gives over 90% efficient conversion and eliminates the need for an external diode, saving cost and size. External components are small, typically 10µH and 10µF.
The MAX1878EGC comes in a small 12-pin QFN package and is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $1.57 (2500-up, FOB USA). The MAX1878EVKIT (evaluation kit) is available to speed designs.
