3.3V, 12-BIT ADCs HAVE HIGH DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE AT LOWEST POWER

 
 

SUNNYVALE, CA-September 4, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces a new family of low-power 3.3V, 12-bit monolithic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) capable of digitizing wide-bandwidth inputs at 60Msps (MAX1420), 40Msps (MAX1421), and 20Msps (MAX1422). Unlike other high-speed 12-bit ADCs, the MAX1420 achieves a full 66dB SNR and 72dBc SFDR at 15MHz input frequency, all while consuming only 221mW of power.

Targeted at high-speed imaging, communication, and instrumentation applications, where wide bandwidth, good linearity, and high dynamic performance at lowest power are required, these new converters feature the highest performance power ratios and low cost. All three parts can be operated from a +3.3V + 5% analog supply, while a separate digital supply pin allows output operation from 2.7V to 3.6V, providing maximum interface flexibility. The three-state output data is presented in straight offset binary format.

THD for the MAX1420 is a low -70dB at 5MHz and remains flat within 1dB to 15MHz input frequencies while operating from a single +3.3V supply. The MAX1420 achieves this high performance with a ±1V input range through the use of an innovative differential pipelined architecture. Both differential and single-ended input configurations are supported.

An integrated, fully differential input T/H amplifier minimizes the requirement for external components while providing high dynamic performance at a low 4pF input capacitance, plus a full power (-3dB) bandwidth of greater than 400MHz. The MAX1420 family features an on-chip precision 2.048V bandgap reference that may be overdriven with an external reference voltage. This allows users flexible input range options and automatically ensures the correct DC bias levels for AC-coupled applications. Pin-compatible, lower sampling rate versions are available with the same excellent specifications for applications requiring less speed: MAX1421 with 40Msps and 188mW; and MAX1422 with 20Msps and 137mW. A shutdown mode is available that reduces power consumption to a mere 10µA during idle periods.

The MAX1420 is packaged in a space-saving 48-pin TQFP with exposed pad specified for the commercial (0°C to +70°C) or extended-industrial (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. The device is priced at $13.56 (commercial grade, 1,000-up suggested resale). An evaluation kit, including the MAX1420 is available for $119.95. Prices are FOB USA.
