HIGHEST POWER STEP-UP DC-DC DELIVERS 20W TO REPLACE MODULES

SUNNYVALE, CA—August 8, 2001—Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1708 and MAX1709 high-power, pulse-width modulated (PWM), step-up DC-DC converter ICs in surface-mount packages. Their power switches are built in for simplicity and size savings, and they are intended to replace 20W nonisolated modules in telecom equipment. They provide a local 5V telecom local supply from a 3.3V bus.

The MAX1709 packs a 22mΩ, 9A power MOSFET power switch into its small, narrow SO package, and provides up to 20W at fixed (3.3V or 5V) or adjustable (2.5V to 5.5V) voltages. The MAX1708 delivers up to 10W (5V at 2A) from an even smaller TSSOP package.

For added flexibility, both parts include programmable soft-start and current limit, allowing external components to be optimized when less than full-power capability is required. These PWM converters run at a constant switching frequency of 600kHz, and can be synchronized to an external signal in the 350kHz to 1MHz range for noise-sensitive applications.

Their input range is 0.7V to 5.0V, and they consume just 1mW of quiescent supply power. They also have logic-controlled shutdown.

The MAX1709 comes in two package options: a 16-pin narrow SO (for lowest cost) or a thermally enhanced 28-pin TSSOP package capable of dissipating 1.9W. Both packages have the same area. The MAX1708 comes in a 16-pin QSOP package that can dissipate 666mW and occupies the same area as a standard 8-pin SO.

The MAX1709/MAX1709 are screened for the extended industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $3.42 for the MAX1708 and $3.57 for the MAX1709 (1000-up, US recommended resale). The MAX1708EVKIT and MAX1709EVKIT (evaluation kits) are available to speed designs.
