FIRST 500mA LINEAR REGULATOR WITH 0.8V OUTPUT IN 1.3W µMAX PACKAGE

SUNNYVALE, CA-June 30, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX1806 low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator, which is the first LDO to deliver output voltages as low as 0.8V at up to 500mA (guaranteed). This thermally enhanced package looks like a standard 1.1mm-high µMAX package, but is capable of dissipating 1.3W, which is 3.6 times more than competitors’ packages with the same form-factor. This wider dissipation range increases the useful operating range of the part. The MAX1806 is intended to power the new and future processors with low core voltages that are used in handheld computers and communicators.

The MAX1806’s output voltage tolerance is ±1% and is preset (to save space and cost) or adjustable from 0.8V to 4.5V (for flexibility). A Power-OK output signal indicates when the output voltage is not more than 7% lower than its nominal value. Input range is 2.25V to 5.5V, and dropout is a low 175mV at 500mA load.

Quiescent supply current is only 210µA and reduces to 0.02µA in logic-controlled shutdown. The MAX1806 uses a P-channel MOSFET power switch, so there are no large base currents like in bipolar switches, even in dropout. Supply current remains steady around 210µA for all loads. The MAX1806 includes protective current-limiting and shuts off in the event of short-circuit or thermal-overload faults.

The MAX1806EUA–_(_designates output voltage) is screened for the extended industrial temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Standard preset output voltages are 0.8V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V and others can be special ordered from the factory. Prices start at $1.40 (1000-up, US recommended resale).
