TINY, DUAL, 256-TAP DIGITAL POT USES SIMPLE UP/DOWN INTERFACE
SUNNYVALE, CA-June 1, 2001-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX5450-MAX5455 dual, 256-tap digital potentiometers that use a microprocessor-compatible 3-wire up/down interface. Available in factory-set end-to-end resistances of 10 kilohms, 50 kilohms, and 100 kilohms, these new pots are excellent alternatives to mechanical trim potentiometers. They eliminate the need for mechanical adjustments on your PC board and add the convenience of digital programmability to new designs. The MAX5450-MAX5455 are useful in such applications as programmable-gain amplifiers and VCO center frequency adjustment.
Using less than 1µA of supply current, the MAX5450-MAX5455 are ideal for battery-powered devices. A low 35ppm/°C resistor tempco and 5ppm/°C ratiometric tempco make these parts suitable for high-precision applications. A power-on reset sets the wiper to midscale (position 128) when power is first applied. The make-before-break contacts allow glitchless switching between taps. The MAX5450/MAX5452/MAX5454 in a 10-pin µMAX (5mm x 3mm) contain two two-terminal variable resistors, whereas the MAX5451/MAX5453/MAX5455 in a 14-pin TSSOP (6.4mm x 5mm) contain two three-terminal potentiometers. Prices for the MAX5450-MAX5455 start at $1.60 (1000-up FOB USA).
