NEW 8051 FROM DALLAS SEMICONDUCTOR FIRST TO INTEGRATE DUAL CAN AND ADDRESS 4-MEGABYTE MEMORIES

DALLAS, TEXAS-September 28, 1999-Dallas Semiconductor today announced the DS80C390 Dual CAN High-Speed Microprocessor, the first high-performance 8051 processor to integrate two CAN (Controller Area Network) bus controllers with a host of peripherals and at the same time break the previous memory barrier by addressing 4 megabytes of external data memory and 4 megabytes of external program memory.

DS80C390 Dual CAN High-Speed MicroprocessorBy integrating two CAN controllers, the DS80C390 meets a growing demand for CAN's wiring simplicity and robust data integrity in embedded systems. CAN circuitry is being used in factory automation, marine control and navigation, industrial control systems, and HVAC control. CAN protocol, a 1-Mbit/second serial standard, enables multiple devices to communicate in real time along a simple bus medium in high-noise environments. All error detection/correction, transmission and reception are carried out in hardware by the CAN controllers. By integrating two CAN controllers, the DS80C390 can host more devices and, since they can communicate transparently with each other, provide back-up redundancy.

Frank Taylor, product manager, said, "We have enhanced the DS80C390's CAN message filtering to allow more efficient communication between devices without burdening the processor. These advanced filtering techniques include two separate 8-bit media masks and media arbitration fields. Besides the standard CAN 11-bit identification modes, the DS80C390 supports extended 29-bit CAN protocols such as DeviceNet and SDS. The DS80C390 can handle high-speed data interchange between more networked CAN nodes more efficiently."

Taylor continued, "Secondly, the DS80C390 can address 4 megabytes of memory with an 8051 core--an extraordinary advantage to users. A 4-megabyte address space supports high-level language code development with larger and more sophisticated data structures. The DS80C390 opens up more programming options to engineers for networking more widely varying types of devices."

The DS80C390 is based on the most powerful 8051 microcontroller core available. Like all of Dallas'High-Speed Micros, the DS80C390 delivers up to three times the processing capability per clock cycle as compared to a standard 8051 because of a redesigned processor core that provides higher efficiency and eliminates wasted clock cycles. At a maximum crystal speed of 40 MHz, the DS80C390 has an apparent execution speed of 120 MHz, for a gain of ten times the performance of the original architecture. An optional internal frequency multiplier allows full speed operation with a reduced crystal frequency and reduced electrostatic noise. A math accelerator with 40-bit accumulator performs high-speed 32- and 16-bit multiply, divide, shift, normalization, and accumulation functions in dedicated hardware.

As a full-featured microcontroller, the DS80C390 uses high-level integration to drastically reduce a system's component count and therefore its cost. Besides standard 8051 resources--three timer/counters, serial port, and four 8-bit I/O ports--the DS80C390 integrates an additional 8-bit I/O port, a second serial port, seven additional interrupts, programmable watchdog timer, brownout monitor/interrupt, powerfail reset, and a programmable IrDA clock. In addition, 4 kilobytes of on-chip SRAM can be flexibly configured in various combinations of memory functions.

Markets for the DS80C390 include manufacturers of automobiles, farm equipment, and specialized medical equipment, factory process control, industrial equipment, and HVAC and other embedded control networks.

The DS80C390 is packaged in 64-pin LQFP and 68-pin PLCC options. Currently in full production, the DS80C390 is available now at a cost of $7.40 in quantities of 25,000. Evaluation boards and a 22-bit assembler for the DS80C390 are available from Systronix.

Dallas Semiconductor designs, manufactures and markets CMOS chips and chip-based subsystems. In its 15-year history, the company has sold its products to more than 15,000 customers worldwide. Major markets include Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in personal computers, telecommunications, office equipment, instrumentation, factory automation, medical equipment and mainframe computers.
