HIGH-PERFORMANCE 8-BIT ADC WITH ON-CHIP T/H CONVERTS AT 1.5Gsps
Note to Editors: The MAX108 is the first 8-bit, 1.5Gsps monolithic ADC to achieve a typical 47dB SINAD and 54dB SFDR at 1.5GHz (2x Nyquist input frequency). The closest competing part, Thomson's 1.0Gsps TS8388, specifies a typical 42dB SINAD and 45dB SFDR at 1.0GHz (2x Nyquist input frequency).
SUNNYVALE, CA-September 28, 1999-Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX108 8-bit monolithic bipolar analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a 1.5Gsps digitizing rate. Ideal for use in high-speed digital communication applications, the MAX108 enables direct IF sampling in broadband, high-rate receivers employing PSK or QAM modulation. The MAX108 is also an excellent choice for other applications where ultra-high sampling rates, wide bandwidth, and high dynamic performance are required.
The MAX108 achieves a full 47dB SINAD and 54dB SFDR at 750MHz (Nyquist) input frequency. The MAX108 achieves this high performance through both innovative design and the use of Maxim's proprietary 27GHz GST-2 IC bipolar process. An integrated, fully differential input track/hold (T/H) combined with precision laser-trimmed resistors produce a typical INL and DNL of less than ±0.25LSB, a full-power bandwidth of 2.2GHz, and less than 0.5ps aperture jitter. A proprietary on-chip decoding scheme further enhances performance by ensuring a low occurrence of metastable states with no error exceeding 1LSB.
To facilitate digital interface, the MAX108 features an on-chip, selectable 8:16 output demultiplexer that slows the 1.5Gsps data rate to 750 mega-words/second ported to two parallel, differential 8-bit, low-voltage (PECL) outputs. Single-port operation is also supported at lower sampling rates. Data is presented in offset binary format and includes an output clock and an overrange bit. The device operates from ±5V supplies and supports 3V to 5V output interfaces.
Proper packaging is also critical to achieving good performance at these frequencies. The MAX108 uses a 25mm x 25mm x 1.2mm, 192-contact Enhanced Super Ball-Grid Array (ESBGA) package to minimize parasitic effects, provide controlled impedance signal paths, and eliminate the need for heatsinking in most applications.
The MAX108 is pin-compatible with the MAX104 (1Gsps) and the MAX106 (600Msps) ADCs, allowing easy performance upgrades. It comes specified for the commercial (0°C to +70°C) temperature range and is priced from $495.00 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit, including the MAX108 device, is also available ($650.00).
