Low-Cost, 3.3V Satellite Tuner for DVB-S and Free-to-Air Applications Eliminates External LNA

Note to Editor:
  • The MAX2120 is a zero-IF, direct-conversion tuner for satellite TV.
  • The MAX2120 reduces total solution size and cost.
  • The low 8.0dB noise figure and wide dynamic range of the front-end eliminate the need for an external LNA, thus saving both space and cost.
  • The MAX2120 is ideal for digital video broadcast-satellite (DVB-S) applications and set-top boxes.

SUNNYVALE, CA—July 31, 2007—Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX2120 low-cost, zero-IF, direct-conversion tuner for satellite TV. This tuner receives QPSK signals in the 925MHz to 2150MHz range and downconverts them to baseband for demodulation. Its low 8.0dB noise figure eliminates the need for an external LNA, while its VCO autotuner function ensures ease of use. The MAX2120 is ideal for DVB-S and free-to-air applications in which low cost and ease of use are key requirements.

The MAX2120 operates from a single 3.3V supply and consumes only 330mW. It is designed to function using a low-cost 4MHz crystal, but an internal reference divider allows the user to select any crystal in the 4MHz to 8MHz range.

Fully specified over the 0°C to +70°C commercial temperature range, the MAX2120 is available in a 5mm x 5mm, 28-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $3.50 (1000-up, FOB USA). Evaluation kits and reference designs are available to speed designs.
