Push-Button Interface on Audio-Taper Digital Potentiometers Controls Volume and Balance
| Note to Editor: Maxim's latest digital pots provide audio designers with the simplest control interface on the market. The MAX5456/MAX5457 provide individual control of balance and volume in audio applications. The devices eliminate the need for a microprocessor, GPIO, or external debounce circuitry to control the interface. |
SUNNYVALE, CA-December 19, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5456/MAX5457, the industry's first dual, 32-tap, audio-taper digital potentiometers that feature a debounced, simple push-button interface for volume and balance control. These devices do not require an external microcontroller, GPIO, or any debounce circuitry for the control interface. An integrated algorithm separately controls volume and balance.
The MAX5456/MAX5457 are available with a 3- or 4-wire push-button interface that features Maxim's proprietary SmartWiper™ rapid-advance wiper-control system. Without needing a microcontroller, SmartWiper advances the wiper at a rate of 4Hz when the switch is closed for one second, and 16Hz when the switch is closed for four seconds. The MAX5456/MAX5457 also feature a mute function that sets all wipers to maximum attenuation when activated, and returns the wipers to their previous position when deactivated. A shutdown feature sets the wipers to maximum attenuation and disconnects H0/H1 from the signal path when activated. Deactivating shutdown returns the wipers to their previous position. Each potentiometer includes integrated suppression circuitry that ensures "clickless" switching between wiper transitions.
Available in a 4mm x 4mm TQFN package, these devices offer significant size reduction compared to mechanical pots. The MAX5456/MAX5457 contain two 10 kilohm resistor strings that offer ratiometric and end-to-end temperature coefficients as low as 5ppm/°C and 35ppm/°C, respectively. These digital pots save power by operating from a 2.7V to 5.25V single supply and by requiring less than 0.5 microamps in standby. Prices start at $1.44 (1000-up, FOB USA).
