12W, Stereo, Class D Amplifier Is Lowest Cost Class D Solution for Flat-Panel Applications

SUNNYVALE, CA-November 11, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX9741, a high-power highly efficient Class D stereo amplifier. The MAX9741 offers audiophile audio quality while delivering continuous output power of 12W per channel into 8Ω loads. This audio amplifier is optimized for flat-panel display and portable-audio applications including LCD and PDP televisions.

The MAX9741 separates itself from other Class D amplifiers by requiring very few external components, leading to the industry's lowest BOM and total solution cost. The Class D efficiency eliminates the need for a heat sink, while the Company's proprietary spread-spectrum modulation (SSM) technology dramatically reduces the external filtering required to pass FCC EMI limits. SSM saves up to $0.15 per channel (based on consumer electronics volumes) on filtering compared to competitors' Class D amplifiers. The MAX9741 also does not require expensive Schottky diodes or large, unreliable electrolytic capacitors.

The MAX9741 offers differential inputs, internal circuitry for comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and four selectable gain settings. Packaged in a 56-pin TQFN, the MAX9741 also includes short-circuit and thermal-overload protection. The device operates over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C). Prices start at $2.70 (1,000-up, FOB USA).
