60mW, DirectDrive Stereo Headphone Amplifier with High RF Noise Rejection for Cell Phones

SUNNYVALE, CA-October 28, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX9724, a 60mW DirectDrive™ stereo headphone amplifier with high RF noise rejection. This device delivers audiophile audio quality with 0.02% THD+N, while eliminating the need for large and costly DC-blocking capacitors on the outputs.

The MAX9724 is highly immune to energy at radio frequencies. In cell phone, MP3, and notebook applications this is critical as numerous wireless technologies transmit data at 100MHz to 3GHz frequencies. High RF immunity ensures that signals at radio frequencies are not demodulated into the audio bandwidth. This results in excellent audio quality, even in the presence of strong RF signals.

Maxim's patented DirectDrive architecture enables the MAX9724 to produce a ground-referenced output from a single supply, eliminating the need for large and costly DC-blocking capacitors. The architecture and the 3mm x 3mm TQFN package significantly reduce the total solution cost, and make the MAX9724 headphone amplifier ideal for portable applications where board space is at a premium.

The MAX9724 delivers up to 60mW per channel into a 32Ω load, while offering 80dB of PSRR and a 101dB SNR. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, features short-circuit and thermal-overload protection, and is specified to operate over the extended -40°C to +85°C temperature range. Adjustable gain (MAX9724A) and fixed-gain (MAX9724B) versions are available in 3mm x 3mm, 12-pin TQFN packages and 5mm x 4.4mm, 14-pin TSSOP packages, respectively. Prices start $0.70 (1,000-up, FOB USA).
