1MHz, 50A Buck Controller Is Easily Configurable for Single or Dual Outputs with Minimal Design Changes


SUNNYVALE, CA-June 2, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5066 PWM buck controller for the design of high-output-current, compact power supplies with minimal external components. With dual outputs, the MAX5066 is well suited for applications requiring separate outputs at up to 25A per output. A mode pin allows configuration of the two outputs as a single output for currents up to 50A or higher. This feature enables the use of one part for multiple designs, thus allowing designers to reuse a proven circuit design on multiple platforms with minimal design modifications.

The MAX5066's internal voltage regulator allows operation from either a 4.5V to 5.5V input or from a 5V to 28V input, making it ideal for operation from a loosely regulated 12V intermediate bus. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.6V to 5.5V.

The average current-mode control scheme used in the MAX5066 allows designers to achieve better than +10% current-limit and current-sharing accuracy (between each phase). An accurate current limit allows use of a smaller inductor and smaller/fewer external MOSFETs, thus reducing power-supply size and cost. A switching frequency, externally programmable from 100kHz to 1MHz, further optimizes power-supply size and efficiency.

Other controller features include: ON/OFF input, external frequency synchronization, thermal shutdown, and hiccup-mode fault management. The MAX5066 is available in two versions, one operating over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range and the other version over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. The MAX5066 is packaged in a thermally enhanced, 28-pin TSSOP. Prices start at $1.95 (1000-up, FOB USA).
