Tiny 4.5V to 40V Input, 1A/1.5A, 250kHz Buck Converters
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 26, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX5080/MAX5082, MAXPower, high-voltage buck converters targeted for the wide-input voltage-range requirement of automotive and industrial power-supply applications. The MAX5080 is also designed for IEEE 1394/FireWire® applications. Operating from a 4.5V to 40V input voltage, the devices withstand up to 45V transients at the input. The MAX5080/MAX5082 include an internal high-side switch and are capable of delivering up to 1A and 1.5A output current, respectively. The output voltage can be adjusted from 1.23V to 32V. The tiny 5mm x 5mm TQFN package permits design of compact power supplies.
The MAX5080/MAX5082sfixed 250kHz switching frequency enables designs with a smaller inductor and capacitors, which saves board space. The devices' use of external compensation allows maximum design flexibility. Designers, for example, can choose all-ceramic surface-mount capacitors for compact, high-performance power supplies, or they can choose low-cost electrolytic capacitors and low-cost inductors for the lowest bill-of-material cost.
To maintain high efficiency even at light loads, the MAX5080/MAX5082 automatically switch to pulse-skip mode. A hiccup-mode short-circuit protection feature ensures that the converter runs cool even with continuous short circuit at the output. Power conversion efficiencies over 90% can easily be achieved due to the devices' low internal MOSFET RDS(ON), low operating current, and low switching losses. For noise-sensitive applications, moreover, the devices' internal oscillator can be synchronized to an external clock signal.
The MAX5080/MAX5082 are rated for operation over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range, and are available in a surface-mount, 16-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $1.63 (MAX5080) and $1.94 (MAX5082) (1000-up, FOB USA).
