Industry's Only Single-Piece, Surface-Mount, Nonvolatile SRAM Module
|
Note to Editor: A Dallas Semiconductor single-piece module, packaging innovation for NVSRAM is the first to enable the use of standard pick-and-place equipment and reflow processes. Unlike existing two-piece, surface-mountable solutions available today, the entire DS2030/DS2045 single-piece module can be reflowed, without requiring a secondary manual battery-cap attachment. The single-piece construction also makes the entire NVSRAM assembly more reliable and tolerant to shock/vibration than two-piece solutions. The single-piece modules are pin-compatible with the companys two-piece PowerCap® modules, so customers can upgrade and take advantage of the benefits of single-piece construction without modifying their PCBs. |
DALLAS, TX- May 3, 2005-Dallas Semiconductor (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the DS2030/DS2045, the first and only single-piece, surface-mountable, nonvolatile SRAM modules. Typical applications for single-piece NVSRAM include POS terminals, RAID/SAN, servers, electronic gaming machines, industrial controls/PLCs, digital oscilloscopes, and hubs/routers.
The packaging innovation of this new single-piece construction offers NVSRAM customers three key advantages over current two-piece, surface-mount packages. First, the entire module can be handled with standard pick-and-place hardware and assembled with standard reflow processes. After reflow, the modules can be washed in an aqueous-based cleaning solution,
requiring no special precautions. Second, manual attachment of a battery cap is not required, thus reducing the overall cost of assembly. Finally, module reliability is improved as there is no interconnect/spring tab mechanism between two pieces, making the single-piece module more tolerant to shock and vibration.
The DS2030/DS2045 single-piece modules are fully static, nonvolatile memories, similar in organization and function to the companys existing NVSRAM modules, but with reflowable batteries. With intelligent circuitry included in these modules, the main power supply is constantly monitored for an out-of-tolerance condition. When such a condition occurs, write protection and data retention are unconditionally enabled to prevent data corruption.
Single-piece NVSRAM can be used in place of SRAM, EEPROM, or Flash memory. Unlike those other memory technologies, the DS2030/DS2045 have no limit to the number of write cycles that can be executed, and no additional support circuitry is required for microprocessor interfacing.
All single-piece modules are specified over the industrial temperature range (-40?C to +85?C). All densities have the same footprint and 256-ball BGA pinout, which allows designs to grow in RAM density requirements without forcing PCB redesign.
Additional single-piece, SRAM, 3.3V/5V modules will be available by February 2005 in densities from 32k x 8 bits to 1M x 8 bits and with an optional real-time clock (RTC).
