Dual-Phase, Quick-PWM Controller for AMD 9G and AMD Hammer CPU Core Power Supplies
SUNNYVALE, CA-May 27, 2005-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX8760, a dual-phase, Quick-PWM(TM), step-down controller for AMD(R) 9G and AMD Hammer CPU core supplies. Dual 180 degree out-of-phase operation reduces input-ripple current requirements and output voltage ripple, thereby reducing the requirements for output and input capacitors and saving cost. Active voltage positioning with adjustable gain and offset reduces power dissipation and bulk output-capacitance requirements.
The MAX8760 is intended for two different, notebook CPU core applications: stepping down the battery directly or stepping down the 5V system supply to create the core voltage. The single-stage conversion method allows this device to directly step down high-voltage batteries for the highest possible efficiency. Alternatively, two-stage conversion (stepping down the 5V system supply instead of the battery) at a higher switching frequency allows the minimum possible physical size.
The MAX8760 features soft-start, power-up sequencing, soft-shutdown, and independent four-level logic inputs for setting the suspend voltage. The switching regulator also includes output undervoltage protection, selectable overvoltage protection, thermal protection, and voltage regulator power-OK output. When any of these protection features detect a fault, the controller shuts down.
The MAX8760 is available in a low-profile, 6mm x 6mm, 40-pin thin QFN package. A preassembled MAX8760EVKIT is available with recommended external components to reduce design time. For compatible drivers, refer to the MAX8702/MAX8703 dual-phase MOSFET drivers.
