iButton Products: DS1921G Transition
The DS1921L-F50 Thermochron iButton was originally introduced with an operating range of -40°C to +85°C and a temperature accuracy specification of ±1°C over that entire range. Since its introduction, several design and production issues have been encountered which have prevented the original specification from being met. As incremental progress was made, several interim devices were produced which met an increasing subset of the original operating range (DS1921L-F51: -10°C to 85°C, DS1921L-F52: -20°C to 85°C, and DS1921L-F53: -30°C to 85°C). However, each of these products still had to be shipped under waiver because they did not meet the intended temperature accuracy specification of ±1°C over their respective temperature ranges.
To solve these problems, the design of the DS1921 and the high volume manufacturing process to produce the device were totally revamped and are now being released to full production. The new version is called the DS1921G-F5. The original goal of an operating range of -40°C to +85°C has been met. The temperature accuracy spec of the DS1921G-F5 is ±1°C from -30°C to +70°C. For temperatures outside this range (-40°C to less than -30°C; or greater than 70°C to +85°C), the accuracy spec is ±1.3°C. The DS1921G-F5 has the same family code, command codes and flows as all previous versions of the DS1921L-F5x. The 12 bit "Temperature Range Code" of the DS1921G-F5 is 000h. The DS1921G-F5 is the final production version of the DS1921 Thermochron. All other previous device versions (DS1921L-F50, DS1921L-F51, DS1921L-F52, and DS1921L-F53) will be phased out once current inventories are depleted. The phase-out of current DS1921L-F5x devices and the phase-in of the DS1921G-F5 will be complete by approximately November 14, 2003.
Note that this change does NOT affect the DS1921H or DS1921Z products. They are NOT being changed or replaced by the DS1921G-F5.
