The DS1921K Thermochron® iButton® Kit introduces users to the temperature logging capabilities of the Thermochron. Using a personal computer, the Thermochron temperature logger can be setup for a temperature gathering mission. After a temperature gathering mission, the data can be downloaded and viewed or exported. Instructions and software are available to download for free from this website.
The starter kit includes one of each of the parts listed below. The DS1921K is also capable of evaluating any sensor iButton, including high-capacity thermochrons (DS1922L and DS1922T), the hygrochron (DS1923), and the temperature-only iButton (DS1920). Please note that only the DS1921 is included in the kit. Other sensor iButtons will need to be purchased separately.

Getting Started
The 1-Wire Drivers (also known as the TMEX Runtime Environment) installation package is available to help evaluate the different versions of iButtons, including the Thermochron. You can download and install the 1-Wire Drivers from here. Detailed instructions on the installation can be found here.
There are several different distributions of the 1-Wire Drivers available. It is highly recommended that you download a distribution that comes with the iButton Viewer and/or the OneWireViewer. These are PC software programs used to evaluate Thermochrons and other iButton/1-Wire products. We also encourage a thorough reading of the on-line documentation available on the 1-Wire Drivers download site before undertaking any experiments. Keep in mind that the iButton Viewer has a help file which will save you time and enhance your first impression of iButtons.
To get started, first install the hardware on a PC. Snap the RJ-11 end of the DS1402D-DR8 Blue Dot Receptor into the RJ-11 port on the DS9490R. The DS9490R is a USB to 1-Wire/iButton adapter. Connect the DS9490R adapter to an unused USB port on your computer. Now, install the 1-Wire Drivers and select the USB port used when prompted.
Snap a Thermochron iButton into the DS9093F fob. Simply slide the iButton into the DS9093F until it snaps into place.
Next execute the iButton Viewer on your PC. The iButton Viewer comes with its own help file and can be accessed by pressing the F1 key at anytime while running the program.
Snap the iButton with fob into the Blue Dot receptor and you will see its address displayed on your PC in the Viewer. Double click on the address to access screens that show all the functions of each iButton. Then, follow the instructions for missioning and reading the contents of a Thermochron.
Troubleshooting Guide
| Symptom |
Possible Cause |
Corrective Action |
| Message Figure A or similar |
Cause 1: The port is in use by another application. |
Verify that no application has the port open or is sharing an interrupt with the port. Look at modem and synchronization software for hand-held computers. |
| (Same as above) |
Cause 2: The PC port hardware is not functioning properly. |
Does the port work with other applications, such as terminal or mouse? |
| (Same as above) |
Cause 3: The 1-Wire adapter is not functioning. |
Try 1-Wire adapter on another PC. If the problem persists, use a different 1-Wire adapter or order a new adapter of this type. |
| (Same as above) |
Cause 4: Incorrect adapter or PC port selected. |
The adapter type is not what is connected, or the port number may be incorrect. Try the 'Auto-detect' feature. |
